In 2006, the actor, writer, comedian, film director and all round television personality Stephen Fry visited Professor Nick Craddock in the Department of Psychological Medicine, School of Medicine at Cardiff University to discuss his views on living with Bipolar Disorder, and to help him with his research. The visit was subsequently turned into a BBC documentary.
Here, you can access a short snippet of the documentary.
As part of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium – a major study looking at the genetics of common, complex diseases – Professor Nick Craddock is trying to identify the many genes involved in bipolar disorder.
Talking about his participation in the Bipolar Study, Stephen Fry also left the following message:
"By choosing to assist [research into] one of the greatest problems facing human happiness you will have done your bit to help remove stigma, shame and hidden pain, as well as hastening the day when we all understand the operations of mind and brain a little better. Thank you so much on behalf of the untold millions you are helping."
Professor Nick Craddock has done a significant amount of work endeavouring to raise the profile of Bipolar Disorder and Bipolar Research. Recently he has participated in similar documentaries with Kerry Katona, formerly of the girl band Atomic Kitten, and N-Dubz singer Tulisa Contostavlos. He is also part of the team that advised Eastenders on the character Stacey Slater's battle with Bipolar Disorder.
