Cardiff University is a leading centre of neuropsychiatric genetic research, and the MRC Centre is host to several organisations that are working together on projects to meet the challenge of public engagement. These include:
The Genomic Minds team is a conglomeration of members and affiliates of Cardiff University. The Senior member of the venture is the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics, who are collaborating with the ESRC Centre for the Economic and Social Aspects of Genomics, the Wales Gene Park, Beacon for Wales Public Engagement and Science Made Simple to provide research into and organisation of public engagement in the fields of:
GENETICS AND PSYCHIATRY
MENTAL HEALTH
NEUROSCIENCE
Jamie Lewis, Ian Jones and Mike Owen (CNGG), Katie Featherstone (SONMS), Wendy Sadler (science made simple), Choon Key Chekar, Andrew Bartlett, Michael Arribas-Ayllon, (Cesagen) Richard Watermeyer, (Beacon for Wales) Claudine Anderson (WGP) and Chris Groves (BRASS).
WHILE new developments in genetic and genomic research have advanced scientific understanding of some of these disorders, public understanding remains poor. The complexity of the science adds an additional barrier to understanding.
The challenge is to improve public understanding, and increase dialogue between publics, patients and professionals.
To meet this challenge, the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics is leading a public engagement programme. As well as engagement activities, the Centre are undertaking research into public understanding of science and mental health.
